Our speaker for the 2/5/25 meeting was Dr. Stephen Frech, Educational Leader at Unity Christian School (formerly LSA) here in Decatur. He spoke about the 3rd grade reading proficiencies and Unity Christian tutoring program since Fall 2023 and middle school tutoring since Spring 2024.

Our speakers for the 2/18/25 meeting were Jamila Wicks, Executive Director of the Illinois State Museum and Amanda Bryden, Registrar of the museum. They spoke about the Illinois State Museum and the Rt 66 celebration.

Laura Cullison of Evergreen Senior Living, will speak on the subject, “Life Unrehearsed.” Evergreen Senior Living has a dementia care philosophy that is a holistic approach to serving seniors with memory impairment honoring both the past and the present.
March 5
Leigh Ray, Director of Social Services at the Salvation Army, will give an insiders’ view of the many services that The Salvation Army provides for the Decatur community. She has 25 years of experience in social services including 7 years owning her own company. Lelah has been the director at The Salvation Army for 10 months.
March 12th
Andrew Taylor, Economic Development Officer for Decatur & Macon County, has worked to provide existing and potential area businesses with the information they need to grow and prosper. He graduated from Millikin University earning degrees in Political Science and Sociology, with a focus on analytical statistics. During his studies, he conducted multiple independent, in-depth research projects into the economic, political and social dynamics of Decatur and its surrounding communities.
March 19
we will hear from Denise Myers, Retired Professor in the School of Theatre & Dance at Millikin University. Although retired, Denise still teaches as an adjunct professor at Millikin. She has, for over 25 years, overseen the creation and implementation of a children’s play to be presented on the Millikin University campus. She does this in partnership with Golden K Kiwanis and with the full cooperation of her students. She will fill us in on the play that they created to be presented on March 29th and 30th in the Virginia Rogers Theater on the MU campus. Tickets for the performance will be available in March from Golden K members or from the Golden K Facebook page.

Mark Sorensen, Illinois Historian returns to make another of several presentations to the Golden K Kiwanis club. He is an educator and historian residing in Decatur. His credentials as a historian range from being president of the Illinois State Historical Society to researching a multitude of historical events in and around Decatur, Illinois. His presentation this time is about “THE WIZARD of OZ in ILLINOIS and BEYOND.”
